Dedicated to the memory of Robert Adkin

Robert passed away on 28th March 2024 aged 56. There isn't a day that will go by that we won't miss him. He was a son, father, brother, uncle, friend, colleague and comrade and we have set up this page to give everyone in his life the opportunity to say some words and leave a tribute to him.

Words from his dad, John:

"My Son. Oh my Son…

A precious privilege to have and to hold. Such gut wrenching grief that's within me now yet full of love, pride and gratitude for the happy memories that we shared together.

Robert was in a great hurry to get into this world. The midwife arrived five minutes before birth, relieving me from the job to my great relief. When he cried; “He’s Arrived “. This is a unique person in his own right, were my thoughts! Amazing!!

Robert was always a happy child full of fun and mischief. His first bike, learning to ride and swim and managing to smash most of the ornaments in the house.

I remember the Christmas he found his Christmas present hidden behind the curtains when he went to draw them. “ DAD, someone has left their bike here “ he shouted in disbelief.

The day he got his first car. Then out of the blue he wanted to join the Royal Navy.

Life in a blue suit from then on, travelling the world and the First Gulf War gave me a sense of great pride.

We went to the docks to meet his frigate from this war. As his ship ‘HMS Active’ sailed in, all boys lined the deck. The Royal Marines played them in to ‘Strangers in the Night’. A very tearful happening.

After 6 years service he was recruited into the UK security services where he served for 18 years. We were so proud of him. But this ended up in very dark times for Robert and for all his family, who lived every part of his trauma. He was caught in the ‘Perfect Storm of Life.  Despite how fate had dealt him the cruelest of blows, he had the strength and loving spirit to help him through. He loved us all very much, especially his children whom he spoke of often.

I love him so very very much and will always be so immensely proud of my son. Processing that he has gone is just too painful to accept.   Dad

Words from his mum, Maureen:

The last Saturday, he arrived early and he looked particularly smart that day... I said to him,” You look lovely give me a hug”... I know now that was the last hug that we ever had...

“ I love you so much Robert”  I said to him and he at me with his beautiful kind blue eyes and said “ love you too mum”

I will never stop holding on to that moment and love that we shared.

Just being in my sons presence gave me such a strong feeling of warmth, joy and happiness. He was my friend and confidante, always there for me no matter what.

Robert was always a happy child forever laughing and full of fun. And that’s the way he went through life, even through those darkest hours, of which there were many.

I will miss you my darling more than words can describe. But know we will be together again one day.
Love you mum x

Words from his sister, Tracy:

My dear brother I miss you so much and love you eternally. I'm so sad.

I’m so proud of your unselfish capacity to love and be loved, your quiet gentleness, discretion and your availability to listen without judgment.

You loved your children more than anything and I know you never wanted to be separated from them.

You had your ‘big dad’ arms to wrap around them and a heart full of love. I know you just wanted calmness and to be a regular family man for always …I know you wanted to be part of Poppy, Jack and Megan’s growing up. They remained the love of your life.

I’m so sad that this was denied to you Robert and I know that if you could have stayed, you would have and I know the ensuing circumstances around why you had to leave the marriage caused you intense pain and distress. Your heart was truly broken being separated from your children - and it never recovered did it...none of us could reach you.

When you went into the UK security services as a family we didn’t know anything about the crazy dangerous situations you had to do in the line of duty, I want so much to thank for trying to keep us all safe. I want to express my pride and gratitude for your selfless bravery.

We all know and acknowledge that you were cruelly ‘tricked’ and ‘constructively’ dismissed and you lost your career that you had devoted 18 years of your life to. That was catastrophic and led you into the darkest of times. Mum and Dad lived that with you and so did I.

I’m so sorry you never received the help you deserved and needed. We tried so hard to get this for you however begging your former employers was like talking to a hostile ‘void’.

It makes me cry that you were cruelly discarded twice in your life and treated so badly. You so didn’t deserve this and it was not your fault - it just wasn’t.

You are my gentle lovely brother with a heart of gold and the courage of a lion and I will eternally think about you every single day. Thank you for being my brother I’m so proud of you.

I'm so sorry that life has been so damn unkind and short for you, it’s heartbreaking.

I want for your spirit and soul to be free with no pain nor anxiety or regret just peace . I see signs of you in the natural beauty of our world. The wind, the trees, the mountains and seas - I know you are there and here in my heart and mind and I will love you until I see you again - my dear sweet brother stay close.

Thoughts

Gosh, my memories of you go back a long way Robert, having known you as both man and boy! The years have gone by, but I always took an interest in hearing what you were doing and more recently always felt great sadness hearing how hard things had become for you. You have gone far too soon, but may you rest in perfect peace now, away from all life’s struggles. We will do our very best by your sweet boy Dave and take the best care of him for you, I like to think you’d approve of him becoming part of our family. He’s a great cat and we all totally adore him already. Sleep easy, you will be sorely missed. Love Mandy, Jerry & Hannah xxx
